Exposed gritstone terraces
The streets climbing Colne's ridge get the weather first. Ridge and verge details here need to be genuinely secure: mortar alone, badly bedded, does not survive a Pennine winter on these roofs.

Local coverage
Covering BB8, including Waterside, Primet Bridge, Laneshaw Bridge, Trawden, Foulridge and Winewall. This is our home postcode, Colne is where SW Roofing is based.
SW Roofing & Property Maintenance is based in the BB8 area, so Colne is not a town we travel to; it is where the van starts and finishes every day. Local reputation here is not something built through advertising; it is built by people seeing the same work on the same streets year after year.
Colne runs up a long ridge, and that geography defines its roofs. Property along Albert Road, Keighley Road and the streets climbing either side sits high and open, taking wind and driven rain straight off the Pennine tops. Roof details that would survive comfortably in a sheltered valley get tested to destruction here.
The housing is predominantly nineteenth-century gritstone terraces with natural slate or stone-slate coverings, mixed with older weavers' cottages towards Trawden, Winewall and Laneshaw Bridge, and more modern estate housing around Primet and the Waterside side of town.
Foulridge, Barrowford and the Trawden Forest villages sit within a couple of miles, and we are on those roofs constantly. It is a small area with an unusually demanding climate, and that combination is exactly what our ten years' experience has been spent on.
Colne is our own postcode, so this is the fastest area we serve. Quote visits are arranged for a time that suits you, and a roof actively letting water in gets prioritised; we will get out to make it safe where the weather allows, then return to complete the permanent repair properly. Timescales still depend on conditions and jobs already booked in, and you will be told the truth about them.
The streets climbing Colne's ridge get the weather first. Ridge and verge details here need to be genuinely secure: mortar alone, badly bedded, does not survive a Pennine winter on these roofs.
Trawden, Winewall and Laneshaw Bridge have older, lower cottages, often with heavy stone-slate coverings and soft lime-bedded detailing that needs materials matched sympathetically rather than a hard cement fix.
Concrete interlocking tile roofs around Primet, Waterside and the newer developments. Verge pointing, valley and chimney flashings and rainwater goods are the usual jobs on these.
What we do here
Every service below is carried out in Colne by the same hands that quoted it. Follow any link for the full detail on how that work is done, what it costs to get wrong, and what you get when it is done properly.

The signature Colne job. Exposure up here punishes weak ridge and verge work, so we rake out to a sound bed, re-bed the tiles correctly and repoint, or fit a dry-fix system where the roof and your budget suit it better.
More on ridge & verge repointing
Being based in BB8 means we will turn out for the jobs others will not: a single slipped slate, a leaking valley, a stack that has started letting water past. Repairs are diagnosed at source, not guessed at from the ground.
More on roof repairs
Colne's tall stone stacks sit right in the weather. Repointing, re-flaunching and correctly dressed lead flashings stop the persistent chimney-breast damp that so many local houses live with unnecessarily.
More on chimney work
When exposure has finished a covering off, we strip back, check and replace defective timbers, fit new membrane and treated battens and re-lay with properly secured ridges and verges built for this climate.
More on re-roofs
Extensions, dormers, garages and outriggers covered in a system built to shed water for years.

Choosing a local roofer in Colne means choosing someone whose work is on display in his own town. Samuel Wildman quotes the job, does the job, and still has to walk past it afterwards; that is a stronger guarantee than most sales pitches.
SW Roofing works from the BB8 area. There is no travel time to price in, no delay getting out to look, and no national office between you and the person doing the work.
Samuel began on the tools after leaving school, spent around six years with a local roofing company, and has run SW Roofing since. That experience is specific to this climate and this building stock.
If a roof has years left in it, you will be told so. Recommending a re-roof on a covering that only needs a ridge repointing is how firms make quick money and lose local reputation, not a trade we are interested in doing here.
£1 million public liability insurance, a workmanship guarantee on every job, free fixed-price quoting, and payment by card, cash or bank transfer.
Local roof problems
Colne's altitude and exposure make it one of the harder places in Lancashire to keep a roof watertight. These are the failures we see repeatedly on BB8 property.
Property along Colne's ridge takes sustained wind with very little shelter. Air pressure differences across the roof pull upward on ridge tiles and verge caps, and any joint already weakened by age gives way.
The failure is progressive: one tile lifts, the exposed bed washes out, the next tile loosens. A ridge line inspected and repointed in autumn is a straightforward job; the same ridge after a January storm has taken half of it, along with the slates it landed on, is a much larger bill.
Colne sits high enough to get a genuinely cold winter. Water soaks into open mortar joints and stone, freezes, expands and forces the joint wider, then the cycle repeats, sometimes dozens of times in a season.
Chimney flaunching is usually the first casualty, followed by ridge bedding and verge pointing. Once the flaunching has cracked, water runs down inside the stack and reappears as damp on the chimney breast in the bedroom below.
Rain here rarely falls straight down. Driven horizontally, it gets under slate laps, behind poorly dressed flashings and past verge details that would be adequate anywhere more sheltered.
This is why lead detailing matters so much on Colne property. Correctly sized, correctly dressed lead at abutments, back gutters and valleys is the difference between a roof that copes and one that leaks every time the wind turns.
The damp Pennine climate grows moss quickly, particularly on north-facing pitches and roofs shaded by higher neighbouring property. Moss holds water against the covering, blocks gutters as it sheds, and forces water sideways under laps.
It should be scraped off carefully by hand, with the roof inspected as the work goes on. High-pressure washing strips the surface off slates and tiles and can take years off a covering that was otherwise sound.
How it works
Ring Samuel on 07534 748896 or send an enquiry with your Colne postcode and a short description. Ground-level photographs help us understand the job before we set off.
We come out to Colne, inspect the roof properly and tell you honestly what needs doing, and what does not. You get a clear fixed-price quote, free of charge and with no pressure to accept it.
Once you are happy with the price, the job is booked in. Pennine weather decides a lot of the schedule, so we give you honest timescales rather than a date we cannot keep.
Work is carried out with precision, the site is left clean, and the job carries a workmanship guarantee. Pay by card, cash or bank transfer, whichever suits you.

Straight answers
Anything not covered here, ring Samuel on 07534 748896 and ask. You will get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
Yes. SW Roofing & Property Maintenance works from the BB8 area, covering Colne itself along with Trawden, Laneshaw Bridge, Winewall, Foulridge and Waterside.
Faster than anywhere else we work, because it is our own postcode. Quote visits are usually within a couple of days, and leaking roofs are prioritised as far as the weather allows.
It depends on the covering, the access and what has failed, so no honest roofer prices it blind. The quote is free, the price is fixed in writing before work starts, and there are no additions afterwards.
No, quotes are free and there is no call-out charge. You are under no obligation to accept the price.
We are not a 24-hour emergency service, but a roof actively letting water in is prioritised and, being local, we can often get out quickly to make it safe before returning to complete the repair properly.
Yes. Older stone property needs sympathetic materials and detailing rather than hard modern fixes, and matching what is already there is part of how we quote.
Often, on exposed Colne roofs, a mechanically fixed dry ridge system copes better with wind uplift than mortar alone. It is not always the right answer though, and we will explain which suits your roof and budget rather than pushing one option.
Yes, public liability insurance up to £1 million, with details available with your quote.
All work carries a workmanship guarantee, with the length depending on the type of job and confirmed with your quote.
Yes, general property maintenance and handyman work runs alongside the roofing, particularly for local and existing customers.
