A dipped ridge line or a bellied slope needs assessing from inside the roof space. Sometimes it is long-settled and stable; sometimes a purlin or rafter has genuinely gone and needs sistering before any re-cover.
Freeze-thaw destroying mortar and flaunching
The valleys are cold and wet through winter, and water sitting in open joints freezes repeatedly. Each cycle widens the joint until pointing and chimney flaunching fail outright.
That is why so much of the work here is repointing. Ridge, verge, stack and flaunching mortar are consumable elements in this climate, renewed on time they protect the roof; left too long they let water into the structure.
Cement fillets where lead should be
A recurring find on Huddersfield property is a mortar fillet used in place of proper lead at abutments, chimney sides and back gutters. Mortar and stone move at different rates, so the fillet cracks and water runs straight behind it.
It is a cheap shortcut that guarantees a return visit. Replacing it with correctly sized, properly dressed lead is more work up front and stops the problem for decades.
