Local coverage

Kirklees Stone and Pennine Weather

Covering HD1 to HD9, including Lindley, Marsh, Almondbury, Meltham, Holmfirth and the Colne Valley. Around fifty minutes from our BB8 base via the M65 and A62.

Huddersfield is around fifty minutes from our BB8 base via the M65 and across. It is at the southern reach of the area we cover, and we plan work there rather than attending at short notice, but the property and the conditions are very familiar ground.

The town and the surrounding valleys are built almost entirely in gritstone, with a great deal of traditional Yorkshire stone slate still in place. Roof structures here were built to carry serious weight, and after a century and a half many of them are showing it.

The Colne and Holme Valleys: Slaithwaite, Marsden, Meltham, Honley and Holmfirth, bring weavers' cottages and mill terraces set high on the valley sides. Long, low, exposed roofs with tall stacks and unforgiving weather off the moor above.

Closer in, Lindley, Marsh, Almondbury and Salendine Nook add larger Victorian and Edwardian houses with more complex roof shapes, dormers, valleys and leadwork than the valley cottages.

How quickly we can get to a Huddersfield roof

At around fifty minutes, Huddersfield work is planned and grouped rather than attended at an hour's notice. Quote visits are arranged for a time that suits you. Roofs actively letting water in are prioritised within our schedule, and if you need someone sooner than we can realistically get there we will tell you plainly.

Valley weavers' cottages and mill terraces

Slaithwaite, Marsden, Meltham and Holmfirth: long stone rows on exposed valley sides, with stone-slate coverings, tall stacks and ridge details that take constant wind.

Gritstone town terraces

Huddersfield's inner terraces with shared party stacks, continuous gutters and slate coverings largely still on their original fixings.

Larger Victorian and suburban housing

Lindley, Marsh, Almondbury and Salendine Nook: complex roofs with dormers, valleys, bay roofs and substantial lead detailing, plus post-war concrete-tiled estates.

What we are most often called out for in Huddersfield

Why Huddersfield homeowners call us

Why Choose SW Roofing in Huddersfield

Exposed Pennine stone roofing is the work we do every week, the same conditions, the same materials and the same failures as the Lancashire side of the hills. Huddersfield is further from base, so we are straightforward about scheduling and about what we can commit to.

Owner-run, one standard of work

Samuel Wildman quotes and carries out every job with one regular worker, adding trusted trades only on larger projects. No subcontracted crews you have never met.

Over ten years on exposed stone property

More than a decade of experience, six of those with a local roofing company, on precisely the kind of gritstone and stone-slate roofs the Colne and Holme Valleys are built from.

Realistic about distance

Huddersfield jobs are planned and grouped. You get a clear date rather than a vague promise, and honesty if we are not the right choice for an urgent same-day problem.

Insured, guaranteed and fixed price

£1 million public liability insurance, free quotes, a fixed written price before work starts, a workmanship guarantee, and payment by card, cash or bank transfer.

Local roof problems

What Goes Wrong on Huddersfield Roofs

Altitude, heavy stone coverings and constant moorland weather give Kirklees property a set of failures we see repeatedly.

Wind exposure above the valley floors

Properties strung along the sides of the Colne and Holme Valleys sit directly in the path of wind funnelled down from the moors. Ridge tiles, verges and any loose flashing are worked constantly.

Once a ridge lifts even slightly, wind gets underneath and the failure accelerates rapidly. Detailing that would last twenty years in a sheltered position may last five up here unless it is specified for the exposure.

Stone slate weight on ageing timber

Yorkshire stone slate loads a roof several times more heavily than modern tile. On buildings from the weaving and mill era, with alterations and removed stacks in their history, that load is not always still carried as designed.

A dipped ridge line or a bellied slope needs assessing from inside the roof space. Sometimes it is long-settled and stable; sometimes a purlin or rafter has genuinely gone and needs sistering before any re-cover.

Freeze-thaw destroying mortar and flaunching

The valleys are cold and wet through winter, and water sitting in open joints freezes repeatedly. Each cycle widens the joint until pointing and chimney flaunching fail outright.

That is why so much of the work here is repointing. Ridge, verge, stack and flaunching mortar are consumable elements in this climate, renewed on time they protect the roof; left too long they let water into the structure.

Cement fillets where lead should be

A recurring find on Huddersfield property is a mortar fillet used in place of proper lead at abutments, chimney sides and back gutters. Mortar and stone move at different rates, so the fillet cracks and water runs straight behind it.

It is a cheap shortcut that guarantees a return visit. Replacing it with correctly sized, properly dressed lead is more work up front and stops the problem for decades.

How it works

From First Call to Guaranteed Work

01

Tell us what the roof is doing

Ring Samuel on 07534 748896 or send an enquiry with your Huddersfield postcode and a short description. Ground-level photographs help us understand the job before we set off.

02

A proper look and a fixed price

We come out to Huddersfield, inspect the roof properly and tell you honestly what needs doing, and what does not. You get a clear fixed-price quote, free of charge and with no pressure to accept it.

03

The work booked in around the weather

Once you are happy with the price, the job is booked in. Pennine weather decides a lot of the schedule, so we give you honest timescales rather than a date we cannot keep.

04

Completed, cleared and guaranteed

Work is carried out with precision, the site is left clean, and the job carries a workmanship guarantee. Pay by card, cash or bank transfer, whichever suits you.

Huddersfield sits inside a wider patch across East Lancashire and West Yorkshire. If you are just outside the town, we are very likely already working nearby.

Straight answers

Huddersfield Roofing Questions, Answered

Anything not covered here, ring Samuel on 07534 748896 and ask. You will get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Do you cover Huddersfield?

Yes, across HD1 to HD9 including Lindley, Marsh, Almondbury, Meltham, Holmfirth and the Colne Valley villages.

How fast can you reach Huddersfield?

Around fifty minutes from our BB8 base. Work here is planned and grouped, with quote visits arranged for a time that suits you.

What does roofing cost in Huddersfield?

It depends on the covering, the extent of the failure and access. Pricing follows a proper inspection, the quote is free and the price is fixed in writing before work begins.

Do you offer emergency roofing in Huddersfield?

We are not a 24-hour emergency service, and at fifty minutes away we will be honest if you need someone faster. Active leaks are prioritised within our schedule and made safe where conditions allow.

Can you work on stone-slate roofs?

Yes. Sound slates are salvaged and reused, laps and fixings set correctly, and the supporting timbers assessed because of the weight involved.

My chimney breast keeps going damp, what causes it?

Nearly always the stack: failed flaunching, open pointing or defective lead flashings letting water into the brickwork or flue. Fixing the stack is what stops it, not replastering inside.

Should I use dry ridge or bedded mortar in the valleys?

It depends on the roof and its exposure. On very exposed positions a mechanically fixed dry system is often the better long-term answer, and we will explain which we recommend and why.

Are you insured?

Yes, public liability insurance up to £1 million, with details available with your quote.

Is your work guaranteed?

All work carries a workmanship guarantee, confirmed with your quote.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Quotes are free, with no call-out charge and no obligation.

How can I pay?

Card, cash or bank transfer.
