Driving rain against gable elevations

Stone slate weight and slipped courses
Graded stone slate relies on oak pegs or nails and on generous laps. As fixings fail, individual slates slip back rather than falling off, leaving gaps that are hard to spot from the ground but let water straight in.

Access and neglected rear elevations
On hillside and over-and-under property, the rear roof slope is frequently three or four storeys up and effectively invisible from anywhere the owner ever stands. Problems there go unnoticed for years.
By the time damp shows internally, water has usually been entering for several seasons and the battens and rafters have suffered. A proper inspection includes the elevations you cannot see.
Moss, shade and blocked valleys
