Local coverage

Deep into the Yorkshire Dales

Covering BD24, including Giggleswick, Langcliffe, Stainforth, Rathmell and Long Preston. Around forty minutes from our BB8 base via the A65.

Settle sits around forty minutes from our BB8 base along the A65, tucked under Castleberry Hill where the Dales properly begin. It is further than Skipton but well within reach for planned work, and we are in the area regularly for stone-roof jobs that towns closer to the coast simply do not generate as often.

The building stock here is a mix of pale limestone in the town itself and darker gritstone as you move out towards Langcliffe and Stainforth. A lot of roofs still carry graded stone slate, laid heaviest at the eaves and diminishing towards the ridge in the traditional way, and a lot of chimneys are tall, thin and built for a fireplace in every room rather than a modern flue.

Giggleswick brings the grammar school buildings and a conservation area's worth of older stone cottages on steep, narrow streets. Langcliffe and Stainforth are smaller, higher and more exposed again, with farmhouses and converted barns sitting out on the valley sides with nothing between them and the weather coming off the fells.

This is genuinely upland exposure, not just a windy town. Rainfall is higher here than almost anywhere else we cover, snow lies longer, and roofs are asked to shed more water, more often, than property twenty miles east or west.

How quickly we can get to a Settle roof

At forty minutes from base, Settle jobs are planned rather than dropped in on. Quote visits are arranged for a time that suits you, and the A65 can add real time in winter conditions, which we will always be upfront about. Genuine leaks are prioritised and we will give you a realistic date rather than a convenient one.

Limestone and gritstone cottages

Settle and Giggleswick's older streets, narrow-fronted stone cottages with steep pitches, small windows and, very often, original stone slate still doing its job after well over a century.

Dales farmhouses and barn conversions

Langcliffe, Stainforth and Rathmell, isolated farmhouses and converted field barns in fully exposed positions, with long unbroken roof slopes and structures never designed for today's insulation or ventilation demands.

Village and infill property

Long Preston and the smaller settlements along the A65 corridor, a mix of stone terraces, later infill housing and outbuildings, generally sheltered a little more than the open fell-side farms but still well above the weather that Pennine towns further south see.

What we are most often called out for in Settle

  • Slipped and delaminating stone slates
  • Ridge and verge repointing on severely exposed roofs
  • Chimney stack rebuilding and re-flaunching
  • Lead valley and abutment renewal on barn conversions
  • Roof timber checks under heavy stone coverings
  • Moss and lichen removal on north-facing fell-side pitches
  • Flat roofs on farm outbuildings and extensions
  • Full re-roofs matching stone slate where it can be salvaged

Why Settle homeowners call us

Why Choose SW Roofing in Settle

Working the western Dales alongside our Lancashire patch means we see stone-slate and gritstone property constantly, not as an occasional job we have to think twice about. Owner-run, so the person who quotes your roof is the person on it.

Regular Dales work, not a rare trip

Settle and the villages around it are a genuine part of our patch. We know which roofs up here are stone slate, which are Welsh slate replacements, and what each needs.

Over ten years on demanding stone roofs

Samuel Wildman has more than a decade on the tools, with plenty of that time spent on the kind of heavy stone coverings and exposed positions that Settle throws up more than most towns.

Materials that match, not the nearest substitute

Stone slate is salvaged and reused wherever it is sound, and where replacements are needed we match tone and thickness rather than fitting whatever is quickest to source.

Insured, guaranteed, fixed price

£1 million public liability insurance, free quotes, a fixed price in writing before work starts, a workmanship guarantee, and payment by card, cash or bank transfer.

Local roof problems

What Upland Exposure Does to Settle Roofs

Settle and its surrounding villages sit higher and take more weather than almost anywhere else we cover. These are the failures that turn up most often on BD24 property.

Mortar failing faster than anywhere else on our patch

Wind speeds and rainfall around Settle are noticeably higher than in the Lancashire towns closer to our base. Ridge and verge mortar that would last a couple of decades on a sheltered street can be opening up within a handful of winters on a fell-side property here.

Once a joint opens, wind gets under the slates on the next gust and lifts a run of them at once, which is why we treat repointing on exposed Settle roofs as something to get right the first time, with proper bedding depth rather than a thin skim.

Stone slate outliving its fixings and its structure

A lot of Settle's older roofs are still on their original stone slate, and the slate itself is frequently sound. What fails is the peg or nail holding it, or the timber underneath it, both of which have had well over a century of damp Dales weather to work on.

That is why we always look inside the roof space as well as at the covering. Re-fixing slate onto rotten battens or a sagging purlin only buys a short amount of time.

Snow and ice loading on high, long roof runs

Settle and the villages above it hold snow longer than towns further down the valley. Heavy, wet snow adds substantial load to a roof already carrying stone slate, and thaw-freeze cycles work into any joint that is even slightly open.

Chimney flaunching, valley junctions and verge pointing are usually first to show damage after a hard winter, and it is worth having these checked every year or two rather than waiting for a leak to appear.

Isolated farm and barn roofs with no shelter at all

Farmhouses and converted barns around Langcliffe, Stainforth and Rathmell often stand alone on the valley side with no trees, walls or neighbouring buildings to break the wind. Every part of the roof, not just the exposed side, takes weather most town roofs never see.

These properties need a roof assessed as a whole rather than patched slope by slope, because a weakness on one side is usually a sign of the same age and exposure catching up with the rest.

How it works

From First Call to Guaranteed Work

01

Tell us what the roof is doing

Ring Samuel on 07534 748896 or send an enquiry with your Settle postcode and a short description. Ground-level photographs help us understand the job before we set off.

02

A proper look and a fixed price

We come out to Settle, inspect the roof properly and tell you honestly what needs doing, and what does not. You get a clear fixed-price quote, free of charge and with no pressure to accept it.

03

The work booked in around the weather

Once you are happy with the price, the job is booked in. Pennine weather decides a lot of the schedule, so we give you honest timescales rather than a date we cannot keep.

04

Completed, cleared and guaranteed

Work is carried out with precision, the site is left clean, and the job carries a workmanship guarantee. Pay by card, cash or bank transfer, whichever suits you.

Nearby areas we also cover

Settle sits inside a wider patch across East Lancashire and West Yorkshire. If you are just outside the town, we are very likely already working nearby.

Straight answers

Settle Roofing Questions, Answered

Anything not covered here, ring Samuel on 07534 748896 and ask. You will get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Do you cover Settle, or is it too far from your base?

We cover Settle regularly. It is around forty minutes from our BB8 base along the A65 and is a genuine part of our working area, along with Giggleswick, Langcliffe, Stainforth and Long Preston.

How quickly can you get to a Settle roof?

Quote visits are arranged for a time that suits you. Winter conditions on the A65 can add time, and we will always be honest about that rather than promise a date we cannot keep.

Can you work on stone-slate roofs?

Yes. Stone slate is salvaged and re-fixed where it is sound, matched where replacement is needed, and the roof structure underneath is checked because of the weight involved.

Why does my chimney keep needing repointing?

Settle's exposed position means chimneys take more wind, rain and frost cycling than most town properties. Repointing done to the correct depth lasts far longer than a quick surface skim, but even good work needs rechecking after severe winters.

Do you charge extra for travel to BD24?

No. Quotes are free and there is no call-out or travel charge, wherever in our area your property is.

Is my roof too remote or too high up to quote?

We regularly work on isolated farmhouses and barn conversions around Langcliffe and Stainforth. Access is discussed at the quote stage so there are no surprises on the day.

My roof lost slates in a storm, is that an emergency?

We are not a 24-hour emergency service, but actively leaking roofs are prioritised and made safe as quickly as conditions allow, then repaired properly.

Do you offer full re-roofs in Settle?

Yes, including re-roofs that reuse salvaged stone slate alongside new matching materials where a full slope needs replacing rather than repairing.

Are you insured for work on older Dales property?

Yes, public liability insurance up to £1 million, with details available with your quote.

How can I pay?

Card, cash or bank transfer.
