What it involves
Gutters, fascias and soffits are one system. The fascia carries the gutter and closes the rafter ends, the soffit ventilates the roof space, and the gutter takes everything the roof sheds away from the building. When one fails the others follow.
This work covers gutter repairs and replacement, realigning runs that have lost their fall, renewing leaking joints and brackets, replacing rotten timber fascias and soffits, fitting uPVC replacements, renewing downpipes and clearing blocked systems. It applies to houses, extensions, garages and small commercial buildings across East Lancashire and West Yorkshire.
Most problems start with something small: a joint dripping, a bracket pulling out, a section holding water because the fall has gone. Water then runs down the fascia and behind the gutter, into the timber and onto the wall head. By the time the fascia is soft, the rafter feet behind it are often affected too.
The assessment covers the whole eaves line rather than just the section you have noticed, so you find out whether it is a repair or a replacement before you commit. The price is fixed, written and free.
A persistent damp stripe down external brickwork nearly always traces back to an overflowing or leaking gutter directly above it.
Painted timber at the eaves needs maintaining. Once it goes soft, gutters lose their fixings and the roof edge is exposed.
Leaf fall blocks gutters and outlets every autumn. Clearing, guards and correctly falling runs stop the annual overflow.
What happens if it waits
A gutter that does not take water away puts it somewhere else: down the wall, into the fascia, onto the wall plate. That water is working on the fabric of the building every time it rains.
Water running down a wall keeps it wet. On solid stone walls, common locally, that shows internally as penetrating damp and cold, and no internal treatment will resolve it while the gutter still overflows.
Water behind the gutter soaks the fascia and then the rafter ends behind it. Timber replacement at that point becomes structural carpentry rather than a board swap.
Once the fascia softens, brackets have nothing to hold. A full run of guttering loaded with water and debris can come away in one go.
Damaged or badly replaced soffits block eaves ventilation, causing condensation in the loft that then gets mistaken for a roof leak.
Gaps in a failed soffit are a direct route into the roof space, bringing nesting, mess and damaged insulation.
Water discharging against a wall instead of into a drain saturates masonry that then spalls in frost, at the bottom of the wall where repairs are awkward.
Rainwater goods are the cheapest part of a roof to maintain and one of the most damaging to neglect. Most of it is straightforward work completed in a visit or two.
Our process
The whole eaves line assessed: gutter falls, joints, brackets, downpipes, fascia and soffit condition, and the rafter feet behind where they can be seen.
You are told plainly which sections can be repaired and which are past it, rather than being quoted for a full replacement by default.
A written fixed-price quote covering access, materials, removal of the old goods and disposal. Free and with no obligation.
Old sections removed, rotten timber cut out and replaced, new fascia and soffit fitted with ventilation maintained, and gutters hung to a correct fall on properly fixed brackets.
Runs tested with water so you can see they flow to the outlet, site cleared, waste taken away and the work guaranteed.
What you get
Water taken off the roof and into the drain instead of down the brickwork, which is what stops the damp inside.
Runs set to fall to the outlet and checked with water before we leave, so you are not finding out in the next downpour.
Rotten fascia removed rather than covered, so the new board is fixed to something solid and the rafter feet are protected.
Eaves ventilation kept open when soffits are replaced, avoiding the loft condensation that comes from sealing them up.
A straight, clean eaves line lifts the appearance of the whole elevation and is one of the first things noticed from the street.
Among the least expensive roofing work there is, and it prevents damp and timber decay that costs many times more.
In detail
Guttering only works when every part of it is right: the fall, the fixings, the joints, the outlets and the timber it hangs on.
Many gutter problems are not leaks at all but lost fall. Brackets sag or were set level, water stands in the run, and it overtops at the low point rather than reaching the outlet.
Realignment means re-setting brackets to a consistent fall towards the downpipe, replacing any that have pulled out, and renewing the unions and seals at the joints rather than filling them with sealant.
Where sections are cracked, brittle or mismatched from previous partial repairs, replacing the run gives a consistent profile with new brackets, unions, stop ends and outlets throughout.
Profile and colour are matched to the property and the neighbouring houses, which matters particularly on terraced streets where the eaves line is continuous.
The fascia closes off the rafter ends and carries the gutter. Where timber has gone soft it is cut out and replaced, capping over decayed timber with a uPVC board simply hides a problem that carries on.
Replacement uPVC fascia is fitted to sound timber with appropriate fixings, giving a maintenance-free finish that will actually hold the weight of a full gutter.
The soffit closes the underside of the eaves and is where roof ventilation usually enters. Replacements are fitted with vented board or continuous vent strip so the roof space keeps breathing.
This matters more than it sounds. Sealing the eaves is a common cause of loft condensation, which produces damp patches and mould that look exactly like a roof leak and get chased for months.
Downpipes are re-fixed or renewed with correct clips and discharge into the gully rather than onto the wall or a path. Shoes and offsets are fitted where the pipe needs to clear a projection.
Where a system regularly overflows in heavy rain, outlet sizing and position are looked at rather than simply replacing like for like and getting the same result.
Blocked gutters are cleared of moss, leaves and debris, and the run is flushed and checked. Where trees overhang, guards can be fitted to reduce how often it recurs.
Moss washed off a roof is a frequent cause of blockage, so gutter clearing is normally done alongside any moss removal work rather than as a separate visit.

Most roofs need more than one thing looking at. These jobs are often quoted alongside gutters, fascias & soffits.
Straight answers
Anything not covered here, ring Samuel on 07534 748896 and ask. You will get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
It depends on the length of run, the number of downpipes, whether fascia and soffit need replacing too, and how the eaves are accessed. Samuel measures it and gives you a fixed written price, free of charge.
Often yes, realigning brackets to restore the fall and renewing failed unions solves a lot of overflow problems. Where sections are brittle or cracked, replacement is the honest answer and you will be told which applies.
Usually because it has lost its fall and water is standing in the run, or because the outlet is undersized for the volume coming off the roof. Both are dealt with as part of the work rather than ignored.
Only if the timber is unsound. If the fascia is solid, new gutters can be hung on it. If it is soft, brackets have nothing to hold and the fascia has to be dealt with first.
Capping is possible where the timber underneath is genuinely sound, but not where it has begun to rot, that just hides continuing decay. Rotten boards are removed and replaced.
Gutter clearing and repairs are usually a single visit. A full fascia, soffit and gutter replacement on a typical house is normally a matter of a few days. Duration is confirmed with your quote.
Yes, including flushing the run and checking it flows to the outlet. Where overhanging trees cause repeat blockages, guards can be fitted.
It would if done badly. Vented board or continuous vent strip is fitted so the roof space keeps breathing, sealing the eaves is a common cause of loft condensation that then gets mistaken for a leak.
